Credit Card Theft Indictments
Largest Cyber Crime Case in US History
Reuters news service reported recently that five men have been charged in a hacking and credit card fraud operation that cost businesses more than $300 million. A Visa card licensee, JetBlue Airways, and retailers including JC Penney and Carrefour were named as targets of the hackers, who reportedly stole at least 160 million payment card numbers.
The operation was very sophisticated, according to the report, with each defendant performing a specialized task, including hacking, data mining, and sales of the stolen numbers. The operation was conducted from anonymous web hosting accounts. Many of the numbers were sold to resellers, which encoded the numbers onto plastic cards which were then resold at a discount to face value.
The report went on to say that law enforcement is slowly making progress on solving cyber crime, but pointed out that the hackers use leading edge techniques.
This incident highlights the need for security awareness by everyone that has an on-line presence. If you have any questions about security, contact sales@eapps.com and we will make sure your questions are answered.

BorrowLenses.com
Customer Q & A
BorrowLenses.com is another rapidly growing eApps customer. The company rents photography and video equipment on-line, which is then provisioned out of warehouses on the east and west coast. The business model is similar to Netflix, with the advantage that customers pay no subscription fees. We recently interviewed Mark Gurevich, one of the founders of BorrowLenses.com.
Mark and a co-founder started the business based on a clear value proposition – providing high end gear that customers want to use on occasion but would not buy because it would be too costly. Their core philosophies are to deliver high quality service, always be responsive to customer needs, and focus on building a team of passionate employees.
We found it a pleasure to speak with Mark. Read the interview to get the perspective of an entrepreneur behind a growing web based business!.
BorrowLenses.com has been a customer of eApps since 2009, and has a high availability (HA) configuration.
