Create-A-Cloud®

New Look and More!

You may have noticed some changes to our Create-A-Cloud® Virtual Cloud Server builder. Instead of bundles, the tool now shows five common configurations with a description of typical usage for each. Customers can still create a custom tailored Virtual Server, but this information provides better guidance, especially for new customers.

Most of the descriptive text has been moved to the question mark information icons – just scroll over the icon and you will see the description for the associated item.

Another big change is the section on Included and Additional Managed Services. Some of our customers told us that we were not adequately describing our free included services. We now make that clear in this section. Also, we have begun to offer additional paid options.  Our popular Uptime Monitoring with First Responder and Priority Support options are still there, and now we have our new Managed Backup option (see article above). Watch this space as we have plans to roll out additional options for security, performance, and visibility of your Virtual Cloud Server. For more information about the eApps Cloud services contact sales@eapps.com and we will be pleased to assist you.

 WordPress Security

WordPress is one of the most widely used tools for web sites ranging from basic blogs to full commercial sites. It may be hard to believe, but there are about 75 million WordPress sites running on the Internet! One of the reasons for its success is that it is designed to allow third parties to integrate themes and plugins. WordPress users can select from thousands of themes and over 38,000 plugins.

The open architecture does have its downside. Over 30,000 WordPress sites are hacked per day! The vast number of themes, plugins, and techniques used in WordPress make it a fertile ground for exploits.

Greg Secrist has an excellent article, “The Tips for Keeping Your WordPress Site Secure” in the online publication Search Engine Journal. One of Greg’s tips is to use a security plugin, such as WordFence to alert you about malware and other security issues. WordFence even helps significantly speed up the performance of WordPress sites with their Falcon Cache feature.

WordFence is a great security add-on. However it only works on WordPress sites. If you need a general security tool check out our Malware and Vulnerability Scanning service, by SiteLock. This service performs a range of security scans and also has a feature that performs a malware scan of the files on your virtual server.

Another one of Greg’s tips is to find a good hosting company, one with real people that will actually talk to you. You found one! eApps is here to help you have a secure and reliable web site. If you need help contact sales@eapps.com and we will be pleased to assist you.

If you need a WordPress hosting service go to http://create-a-cloud.com, click on the “OS Template” drop down list and select the CentOS 7 64bit LAMP/w MariaDB (ISPmanager) OS template. You can install WordPress from the Control Panel and the WordFence plugin from inside WordPress.

Tech Tip

Switch to MariaDB?

MariaDB is the “drop-in” replacement for MySQL. This tip tells you why you should care.

MySQL has a GNU Public License (GPL). However, a private entity owned the name and provided a supported commercial license. This entity was purchased by Sun Microsystems which became part of Oracle when they acquired Sun in 2009.

Since that time one of the creators of MySQL forked MariaDB as a new open source product. The main reason was a concern that Oracle’s commercial interests would outweigh the public interest of a free and open MySQL.

There is some debate over whether this has happened, but many Linux distributions, including Fedora, Red Hat, and CentOS, have switched to MariaDB. This doesn’t mean you can no longer use MySQL, but it does mean that the Control Panels and other tools typically used for MySQL have also switched to MariaDB.

The proponents of MariaDB make their case that it has superior performance, less security risk, and additional features that make for compelling reasons for you to switch too. The following links will help you get started.
